Maine - Memorial Day weekend

I was in Maine over Memorial Day weekend. Did I mention how lucky I am that my parents own a cottage and a couple of motel units in Wells, Maine? They've been very generous with one of their motel units and I feel really lucky that I get to run away to Maine a couple of times a year. I've posted pictures of Maine before but for me, they never get old :-) In a lot of ways the scenery of Maine is exactly what people think of when they think "New England." The only bummer of the weekend is on Monday the whole area smelled like smoke. The smell was so strong that I actually thought that a nearby house was on fire. Turns out the wind was blowing the smoke from the fires in Quebec southward. My friends in the city where I work (a good 6 hour drive from Quebec City) told me they could smell smoke most of the weekend! The beach was very hazy on Monday morning.

I spent a lot of time walking on the beach during this visit. I stopped in York, ME on the way up to Wells and wandered along the shore for quite a while. If this was my view I'd probably never leave these chairs. I couldn't get over how blue the water was in York. I was surprised at how many people I saw swimming in the ocean over the weekend. The weather was nice but the water temperature was COLD!
This is my dad's favorite house. It's built right over the water. X referred to original house, on the right, as "that pile of brown" which I still find both hilarious and accurate. They've added on and improved the house over the winter. I can't wait to see the finished house. It's the perfect size and the perfect location.
I love these little beach birds. Every time the waves roll in, they run like mad away from the water.
Sunset over Kennebunkport. I had hoped to get in some sunset watching but was busy during most of the sunsets. I love how the sun reflects on the water.
My favorite house! It makes me unreasonably happy that in the middle of all these typical New England beach houses that there's a bright purple and green original. I liked it better when the house was bright yellow but I still like the purple and green is pretty rad.
This is Gipsy. Gipsy is the world's sweetest yet dumbest dog. Gipsy lives in the harbor area where we put the kayaks in. Gipsy used to have a sibling but the sibling died. Gipsy now spends his time sleeping and standing in the water. He literally just stands in the water like a statue. If you throw a rock to him while he's standing in the water he'll try to hunt for it but he doesn't like to put his face in the water. If I had a dog it would be a dog like Gipsy.
My parents' place is only about a mile from the ocean. Nice view, eh?
Normally you can see for miles as you walk along the beach. Because of the smoke the view was hazy on Monday and more like the view from L.A.'s beaches
I'll be back in Maine over July 4th weekend. I'll try to take some different pictures so I don't keep boring everyone with the same ole, same ole. My camera is dieing a painful death so maybe by July 4th I'll be experimenting with a new camera?

  4. True but the other place was also inhabitable. I saw it from the water while kayaking and it looks like the new place is more of a hybrid of new and old. Ah, progress . . .
